Menorca, the most northeast of the Balearic Islands, stands out for being the quietest, least touristy and least inhabited of the archipelago. It has been a Biosphere Reserve since 1993 due to its high natural and scientific value and its development is slow and sustainable, which is why it differs greatly from the rest of the neighboring islands.
It has a coastline of more than 400 km and, among its closest islands, it is the one with the most beaches, most of them with white sand and turquoise waters, which have remained untouched to this day.
It is the smallest of the Balearic archipelago, although rich and diverse. It measures approximately 50 km from end to end, which is why it is affordable to visit it by sailboat, taking different routes and allowing you to cross it from one side to the other in just one day, even stopping at various coves.

Its capital is Mahón, while, at the opposite extreme, we find the charming Ciutadella. They are the main cities and, in general, they are the points chosen to sail by the majority of our customers.
Sailing through the port of Mahón is already an experience in itself, with approximately 6 km in length, it is the largest natural harbor in the Mediterranean and one of the largest in the world. Its channel is very deep, allowing ferries and even cruise ships to visit it frequently; It has various islands and is a firm testimony of the historical richness of the island, revealing the architectural and military heritage from different periods and occupations.
At the other side of Menorca, we find Ciutadella, a stately city full of alleys, world famous for its San Juan festivities, candidates for World Heritage Site, where riders in their best clothes, get their horses on their feet and walk through the streets full of people in the well-known Jaleo.
If you do not visit Ciutadella during San Juan, you can also enjoy its medieval old town, dominated by its spectacular Gothic cathedral, letting yourself get lost in its streets and squares full of restaurants, where you can savor the typical dishes of the island.
If we could divide Menorca into two parts, we would do so by drawing an imaginary line from Ciutadella to Mahón, differentiating the north face from the south, each having a different coastline, with its characteristic and distinctive features.
Sailing through the north of Menorca
The north coast is the most virgin, wild, abrupt and largely dominated by cliffs sculpted by the millenary persistence of the Tramuntana, a strong northerly wind that is born in the Gulf of León and which he regularly visits the island, shaping its coastline, combing its trees, cleaning its waters and purifying its air.
If you have little time, the best ports of embarkation to discover the north are Fornells and Addaya, and you can also set sail from the main ports of the island; Ciutadella or Mahón.
Sailing on a sailboat along the north coast of Menorca, and ordered from west to east, the following stops are a must:
- Pont d’en Gil, an extraordinary natural rock bridge under which it is common to see small boats pass. It is mandatory to jump into the water, to snorkel, appreciate its crystal clear waters and observe the amount of marine fauna and flora that lives there.
- S’Amarador, a wide cove with steep rock and no beach, so it is usually very quiet. On calm days, it offers one of the best colors of water in all of Menorca.
- Cala Morell, which despite being a small cove and surrounded by apartments, draws attention for its good shelter, its rock at the entrance in the shape of an elephant and the necropolis from the Talayotic period, where it is worth visiting for a walk.
- Algaiarens is one of the largest that opens to the north and is a good shelter from the sea and the wind, where to anchor and spend the night. The sunset is quite a spectacle and the next morning, it is advisable to go ashore to stretch your legs and greet the turtles that live in the pond behind Des Bot beach.
- Pregonda is our favorite cove on the north side of the island, almost virgin and surrounded by rock, with a narrow entrance and perfectly calm waters. Sleeping on the sailboat anchored in this cove is a luxury for all the senses.
- Fornells is located in the center of the northern coast, where it is always advisable to stop, to stroll through its picturesque fishing village full of white houses, and then taste a lobster stew in one of its restaurants on the promenade, facing the bay.
- L’Arenal de Son Saura and l’Arenal d’en Castell are 5 minutes from each other and are good anchorages that offer the possibility of going ashore to have a drink or eat in one of their restaurants. The former is more intimate and less built-up, while l’Arenal d’en Castell has a shape and depth that provide excellent calm for spending the night.
- Es Grau and the Illa d’en Colom, is a spectacular virgin place to spend the night. When the weather is right, Isla d’en Colom offers perfectly calm waters, and the next day, you can visit Els Tamarells beach on the island itself or go to Es Grau to eat something in one of its restaurants.

Sailing through the south of Menorca
The southern coast of Menorca is the most touristic and it is not surprising, since it is where you will find endless amazing and paradisiacal calas, with white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, separated by no more than half an hour sailing on a sailboat. If you have ever dreamed of being in paradise, surely you were imagining one of these places.
To name a few, and ordered from west to east, you must visit when sailing in the south of Menorca:
- Son Saura, an open beach of virgin sand that offers anchorage to numerous boats during the night when moderate winds blow from the north. It has a walk that leads to its neighboring cala des Talaier where you can see some trenches and a boarded up bunker from the civil war. During the night, its position away from urban centers allows the stars, constellations and even satellites to be observed very clearly.
- Cala Turqueta is small but beautiful, the color of its water and its Posidonia banks create an incredible image that seems to be taken from a fairy tale. In addition, its relief and the adjoining forest offer the best protection against the north wind.
- Cala Macarella and Macarelleta are probably the most photographed and famous calas on the island. Its color is unreal and it is recommended at all costs to get off the sailboat, have a drink or eat at its beach bar and take a walk to the viewpoint, where the views will leave you speechless.
- Cala Galdana faces southwest, is highly urbanized and crescent-shaped, it is a good option for those looking for a wide range of restaurants or entertainment venues. It has buoys and a boat-taxi service to leave you on land.
- Mitjana is the opposite of its neighboring cove, totally virgin, with crystal clear and shallow waters. Two bunkers also watch over its ends and, if desired, it also has a magnificent viewpoint on the east side.
- Trebalúger is the next one, similar to the previous, although it has a small freshwater stream in which one can venture to discover it on paddle or with the rowing helper. On the eastern side, in addition to another bunker, we find a cave formerly inhabited with magnificent views.
- Cales Coves is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular on the south coast; Its entrance by sailboat is impressive, with tall and narrow cliffs that channel the wind and sounds. If capacity allows, it is worth anchoring and discovering its necropolis, the most important in Menorca and which has almost a hundred caves that were inhabited by a hippie community in the 1970s.
- Cala en Porter is the oldest urbanized cove on the island and is where the well-known Cova d’en Xoroi is located, an impressive cave in the middle of a 30-meter cliff that was inhabited by primitive man and today has been converted into a disco bar .
- L’Illa de l’aire, an islet in front of Punta Prima, inhabited only by its lighthouse and by a unique species in the world of black lizards. Although it is forbidden to disembark as it is a nature reserve, seeing it up close, jumping into the water and snorkeling through its Posidonia meadows is quite a sight.
